Chembur is a north-easten suburb of Mumbai. Due to its central location, Chembur is a major transportation hub. Roads passing to Navi Mumbai (New Bombay), Ghatkopar, Sion, Kurla and Mulund / Thane criss cross each other at Chembur. Chembur is serviced by the harbour line of the Central Railways.
Chembur was developed as an industrial suburb but today it is largely a residential suburb.Old time bungalows and villas are now making way for high-rise apartments.Chembur has a cosmopolitan population that is dominated by maharashtrians, sindhis and south indians.
Its proximity to the garbage incinerators gave it the title of being the 'gas chamber of Mumbai' but pollution has reduced in the recent years.
