About Ghatkopar West

Ghatkopar is known as one of the happening areas in the central part of Mumbai. It is bustling with several eateries, shopping centres, computer and coaching classes.

It has a large population of Gujaratis and hence is often referred to as mini-Gujarat.

Obviously, the place rocks during Navratri.

However, there are areas like the Rajawadi Hospital and Pant Nagar that have many Marathi speaking residents and localities in Ghatkopar West that have a large Muslim population. One of the classy areas of Ghatkopar is Garodia Nagar which too houses a cosmopolitan crowd.

Several streets in Ghatkopar are named after some its famous residents like Hingwala lane from a family that had asafoetida business, Khetani chowk named after Durlabhji Keshavji Khetani, a renowned industrialist and philanthropist whose descendants still live here, and Cama lane comes from Lady Cama Bai and so on.

Building boom

Construction activities in Ghatkopar boomed in 1960s through 1980s. This led to the appreciation of prices in the area which have now reached upto Rs 4,000-Rs5,000 in better parts of Ghatkopar.

The real estate here is prime and several well-known builders have their projects here.

Some of the builders that have upcoming projects here are: Acme (near Sarvodaya Hospital),  Seth Developers, Kalapataru builders Neelkanth builders and Silver Group (Tilak Road).

Major roads in this suburb are Mahatma Gandhi Road, RB Mehta Marg, Barrister Nath Pai Marg, Tilak Road, Bombay-Agra Road and Amar Mahal and new projects are coming up on some of them.

The famous industrial group, Godrej, is hardly a kilometre away from Pant Nagar and acquires a huge area in Ghatkopar.

The Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road, which connects the area to Saki Naka (Andheri) via Powai has become one of the most busy lanes, not only during the peak hours but also on weekends.

Domnic Savio Vidyalaya, G S P Mandal’s Marathi Vidyalaya, S S Multi Purpose Technical High School, Vanita Vikas Mandal High School, Smt P G Garodia English High School, Ramji Ashar Vidyalaya High School (Gujarati Medium), Sheth Dhanji Devshi Rashtriya Shala, Shree Vadilal Chatrabhuj Gurukul Gujarati High School, Smt M D Bhatia English Medium High School, Guru Nanak English High School, North Bombay Welfare Society High School, and the famous Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College are some of the educational institutes in this area.

Ghatkopar is a suburb of Mumbai. It is also the name of a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Central Railway line.

By 1916, Ghatkopar had developed sufficiently that a municipal council for Ghatkopar-Kirol was set up. The administration was in charge of a Collector with the "Suburban District". In 1945 Ghatkopar was absorbed into Greater Bombay.

This middle class suburb consists of predominantly residential and retail establishments. Within Ghatkopar are multiple areas, such as Ghatkopar (West), the area of Ghatkopar west of the railway line, Ghatkopar (East) - the area of Ghatkopar east of the railway line, Garodia Nagar - a large development developed by (and on land owned by) the Garodia family, Pant Nagar, Rajawadi.

The major private elementary schools in Ghatkopar include North Bombay Welfare Society High School (Ghatkopar West), Fatima High School (in the border area with Vidyavihar), Gurukul High School (Ghatkopar East), Garodia High School (Garodia Nagar), Ramji Assar High School (Ghatkopar East). The major college in Ghatkopar is the Somaiya family of colleges (Arts, Science, Management, Engineering and Medicine). In addition, the suburb is served by atleast three Muncipal schools.

Ghatkopar is in the N ward of Mumbai (previously referred to as Bombay) muncipality. There is a large Gujarati speaking population in Ghatkopar and the suburb is often referred to as mini-Gujarat. Rajawadi, Pant Nagar have large Marathi speaking populations. Garodia Nagar is diverse. Areas of Ghatkopar West bordering the neighboring Vikhroli suburb have a large Muslim population.

The suburb is well connected to all major portions of the city. Major roads in this suburb are 60 ft Road (RB Mehta Marg), 90 ft Road, Bombay-Agra Road, Amar Mahal Road. Ghatkopar is a stop for slow local trains as well as most fast local trains on the Central line of the Mumbai suburban network. The station is equipped to handle 12-car local trains. There are 2 Ghatkopar locals which originate from Ghatkopar in the morning.

Crime in Ghatkopar consists primarily of petty theft and crime statistics generally are on the lower end of the spectrum for the Greater Mumbai area. However in recent years, Ghatkopar has been disproportionately targetted and affected by sectarian violence.

Ghatkopar is nearly the centre point of Mumbai and is almost equidistant from all places. One of the advantages of Ghatkopar is that slow as well as fast local trains on the central railway route stop here.

In fact, two local trains now start from Ghatkopar, which is a boon for those plying to CST in the morning rush hour.

Ghatkopar is well connected by BEST buses which ply to all parts of Mumbai.

Bus number 416 goes from Amrut Nagar to station.

From Ghatkopar, bus number 410 goes to Mahakali caves in Andheri, 380 goes to Chuna Bhatti, 388L and 488L to Gorai Depot, 27 to Worli Agaar, 340 to Andheri station, 385 Mumbai Central to Ghatkopar E, 507L and 10L  to Hutatma Chowk, 24L goes to NCPA, 381 to BARC, 384 to Bandra, 384E to Juhu Chowpatty, 392 to Majas Depot, 709L to Bhayander station, etc.

Rickshaw fare from any part of Ghatkopar to the station is about Rs 15 to Rs 25. Sharing a rickshaw is a normal practice here and costs about Rs 5 per person.

The Trivedi Paan shop is one of the famous paan shops in this area
