CM wants ratings for builders

Says It’ll Help Govt Select The Best Cos On The Basis Of Merit

MAHARASHTRA chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh wants a rating agency for builders. The rating system for builders would help the government select the best companies on the basis of their credentials, Mr Deshmukh said. The chief minister was speaking at a ceremony to mark the installation of Mahesh M Mudda as chairman of the Builders’ Association of India, Mumbai Centre, on Friday.

Mr.Deshmukh said the issue of recognition from the society was very important for the builders and the rating system could play a major role in this regard. He said the building and construction industry had a vital role to play in the development of Mumbai as a major international finance centre. He said Mumbai makeover was on top of the state’s agenda and acknowledged that the building industry would be an integral part for setting up an excellent infrastructure. The state government had also initiated a Rs 225 lakh crore business plan for Mumbai metropolitan region’s growth into a major economic and industrial hub.

Mr.Deshmukh said there had to be mutual trust and co-operation between the government and the real estate sector. The state has also placed adequate housing for the poor and middle class high on its agenda and to remove misconceptions and corruption, it has clarified that construction and sale of flats and properties would only be on the basis of carpet area. This would create a win-win situation for both the builders and the government, he claimed. He informed the gathering that the MMRDA has earmarked Rs 6,500 crore on infrastructure projects in Mumbai metropolitan region.

Earlier former chief minister Manohar Joshi had urged the building community to consider Mumbai city as their own and venture into social projects like the construction of schools, colleges and hospitals so as to ensure good image and clean reputation.
