The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has achieved a significant milestone in property tax collection for the fiscal year 2024-25, collecting Rs 810 crore, which is 95% of its target of Rs 850 crore. This marks an increase of Rs 108 crore compared to the Rs 702 crore collected in the previous fiscal year (2023-24). The rise in revenue is attributed to enhanced administrative efforts and improved digital payment options.

Growth in Property Tax Collection

The increase in property tax collection in Thane reflects the city’s expanding tax base and the effectiveness of the civic body’s strategies. The substantial progress made in achieving nearly the entire target is crucial for funding infrastructure and public service projects. This revenue boost will contribute significantly to urban development and the enhancement of civic amenities in the city.

Convenient Payment Options

To facilitate easier tax payments, the TMC has implemented a variety of digital payment options. Residents can now pay their property taxes through online links, direct debit, and credit or debit cards. Additionally, the introduction of ATMs and 21 physical collection centres, along with mobile van camps set up in housing societies, has made it more convenient for residents to settle their dues.

Public Awareness and Compliance Strategies

The TMC has also focused on raising public awareness regarding property tax obligations. Campaigns utilizing SMS reminders, auto-rickshaw advertisements, and social media have kept residents informed about their tax responsibilities and deadlines. These initiatives have contributed to higher compliance rates among taxpayers.

Enforcement Measures

To ensure timely collection, the civic body has taken strict measures against defaulters. Actions such as issuing warrants, property seizures, and service interruptions have been employed as deterrents to encourage compliance. These enforcement strategies are vital for maintaining the integrity of the tax collection process.

Practical Takeaway

The TMC's achievement in surpassing its property tax collection target is a positive indicator for the city’s financial health. For residents, the availability of multiple payment options and increased public awareness campaigns can lead to a more streamlined tax payment experience. This development not only supports the city's infrastructure projects but also enhances the overall quality of life for its residents.
