Dharavi Redevelopment Project Surpasses 63,000 Tenements Surveyed

Dharavi Redevelopment Project Surpasses 63,000 Tenements Surveyed

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has achieved a significant milestone, with over 63,000 tenements surveyed as part of its ongoing efforts to transform one of Asia's largest slums. This development marks a notable advancement in the mapping and documentation of the area, surpassing the previous survey benchmark set in 2007-08, which recorded around 60,000 ground-floor tenements. The current survey not only includes ground-floor structures but also upper-floor tenements, reflecting a broader approach to ensuring housing for all residents of Dharavi.

Survey Progress and Inclusivity

The survey has made substantial progress, with lane reconnaissance completed for over 95,000 tenements. More than 89,000 tenements have been numbered, and door-to-door surveys have been successfully conducted for over 63,000 tenements. This comprehensive survey encompasses ground-floor and upper-floor structures, existing Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) buildings, slum dwellers on RLDA land, and various religious structures. The DRP aims to be inclusive, ensuring that no resident is left behind in the redevelopment process.

Government Commitment to Housing

Under the SRA guidelines, typically only ground-floor tenants qualify for free housing. However, the current survey's inclusion of upper-floor structures indicates a commitment from the government to provide housing solutions for all residents of Dharavi. DRP CEO has emphasized the importance of this inclusivity, highlighting that the redevelopment scheme is designed to accommodate the needs of all residents.

Next Steps for Residents

The survey is now entering its final phase, and authorities are encouraging residents who may have missed the opportunity to participate to come forward. It is important for residents to note that those who have refused or failed to provide necessary documentation will not be revisited. This final phase is crucial for ensuring that all eligible residents are accounted for in the redevelopment plans.

Future Developments and Relocation Plans

Navbharat Mega Developers Private Limited (NMDPL), the entity responsible for the redevelopment, plans to construct around 1.5 lakh tenements. This is in response to the vertical expansion of hutments in the area, which has increased the number of tenements requiring rehabilitation. Eligible residents will be rehabilitated within Dharavi, while those deemed ineligible will be relocated to new modern townships outside Dharavi. These new townships will be equipped with essential infrastructure and Metro connectivity, providing residents with improved living conditions and access to amenities.

Practical Takeaway

The ongoing survey and redevelopment efforts in Dharavi signify a transformative approach to slum rehabilitation, aiming to provide housing solutions for all residents. For current residents, it is essential to engage with the survey process to ensure eligibility for rehabilitation. The project not only aims to improve living conditions but also to foster a sense of community and dignity among the residents of Dharavi.
