Vastu for flats in Mumbai: directions, myths and remedies
Some buyers won’t look at a flat without checking its Vastu; others don’t follow it at all. Either way, it helps to know the facts — which way a flat really faces, what Vastu says, and where the common beliefs go wrong.
We describe Vastu as a tradition. We don’t claim any direction or remedy brings luck.
1. Which way does your flat face?
Stand inside the flat at the main door and look out. The direction you are looking is the flat’s facing. The building’s frontage, the road or the balcony do not decide it — in a tower, flats on the same floor often face four different ways. Use your phone’s compass app at the door.
2. Vastu-friendly directions at a glance
| Part of the flat | Vastu-friendly | Usually avoided |
|---|---|---|
| Main door | North, east, north-east | South-west (and, for some, south) |
| Kitchen | South-east; cook facing east | North-east; directly opposite the main door |
| Master bedroom | South-west | North-east |
| Toilets | West, north-west | North-east; centre of the flat |
| Prayer corner | North-east | Next to a toilet |
| Centre of the flat | Open, uncluttered | Toilet, pillar or staircase |
| Balconies and big windows | North and east | Large openings on the south-west |
| Shape | Square or rectangle | Missing north-east or south-west corner |
3. Myths, checked
Classical Vastu divides each wall into nine positions (padas). On the south wall, positions 3 and 4 from the south-east corner are traditionally considered favourable. The objection is mainly to the south-west end. Followers read a south door differently — some avoid it, others consider it auspicious in the right position.
No. The facing is decided by your own flat’s main door. In one tower, different flats face different ways.
Much of it matches Mumbai’s climate: gentle morning light from the east, harsh afternoon sun from the west, and sea breezes that cool a flat open to the north and west. A kitchen in the south-east gets morning light and dries out quickly.
Followers usually correct it with placement, colour and small additions rather than breaking walls — see the remedies below.
If you don’t follow Vastu, that can mean more choice and room to negotiate. If you may sell later, remember the next buyer might follow it.
4. One plan, two directions
The same 3 BHK, drawn twice. Only the direction changes — and with it, how a Vastu follower reads the plan.
North door
Vastu-friendly · Main door: north · Kitchen: south-east · Master: south-west · No toilet in the north-east
South door
Main door: south · Kitchen: north-east · Master: north-west · No toilet in the north-east. The efficiency is identical; the kitchen and master move to the north side.
5. Remedies people commonly use
These are traditional practices that Vastu consultants commonly suggest. We list them so you know your options; we don’t claim they work.
For a south door
- Prefer a door in the middle positions of the wall (S3–S4) over the south-west end.
- A raised wooden or marble threshold, often with a brass or copper strip.
- An image of Lord Ganesha or Panchmukhi Hanuman above the door.
- Bright lighting at the entrance, and red, maroon or brown tones on the door.
For a kitchen in the wrong corner — place the stove in the south-east corner of the kitchen itself, and cook facing east.
For a toilet in the north-east — keep it closed and well lit; many people keep a bowl of sea salt inside.
For a master bedroom outside the south-west — sleep with your head to the south, and keep heavy furniture in the room’s south-west corner.
For a missing corner — mirrors, plants or lights are used to “complete” the corner.
