MHADA to Provide 20,000 Rent for Residents of 96 Dangerous Cessed Buildings

MHADA to Provide 20,000 Rent for Residents of 96 Dangerous Cessed Buildings

The Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB), a unit of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), has declared 96 cessed buildings in Mumbai as the most dangerous following its pre-monsoon survey. In response to the safety concerns, MHADA has announced that residents of these buildings will be provided a monthly rent of 20,000 if they arrange for alternate accommodation independently. This initiative aims to assist approximately 2,400 tenants and residents of the affected buildings, ensuring they have support while they seek safer living arrangements.

In addition to the rent assistance, MHADA will also lease 400 transit tenements ranging from 180 to 250 sq ft for a period of three years. These tenements will be provided to the displaced tenants and residents, with the board issuing a public advertisement for the leasing process. However, the board currently has only 786 available transit units, making it challenging to accommodate all affected residents in its existing facilities.

The expenses for the rent and the leased transit units, including maintenance, will be recoverable from the private developers or cooperative housing societies responsible for redeveloping the properties. MHADA also manages over 20,000 transit tenements, which are used to provide temporary accommodation for tenants displaced due to building repairs, redevelopment constraints, or demolition projects.

With over 13,000 cessed buildings in Mumbai, the redevelopment of these structures remains a priority, and MHADA is working towards ensuring that residents are safely rehoused during the process.
