NMMC has authority to collect property tax in Thane-Belapur industrial belt: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has upheld the Navi Mumbai civic body's power to levy and collect property tax from industrial units in the TTC-MIDC area along the Thane-Belapur belt. The court ruled that the industrial development agency cannot impose such tax in this region.
Previously, units were exempt from property tax only while the industrial agency provided civic services. This exemption lapsed once those services were transferred to the municipal corporation under a 2005 arrangement. Pending dues across the belt are estimated to exceed βΉ800 crore, affecting more than 3,000 units, thereby settling a long-running dispute.
